The UK branch of UNIT is under threat. The Government wants its own
military investigative organisation, one under its sole control. The public
want answers to the strange things that have been happening recently.
When the division's commanding officer goes missing whilst transporting a
dangerous cargo, Colonel Emily Chaudhry, UNIT's political officer, is
thrown in at the deep end. Things are not helped when a series of
accidents show a bizarre pattern.
The Brigadier, meanwhile, is trying to enjoy his retirement but it seems
it is time again for him to come to the rescue.

Colonel Emily Chaudhry: "The press are going to love this. How the
hell do I explain that our CO is missing? And just to make it more
interesting we've lost an alien spaceship..."
General Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart: "I swear most of them think
that business at my retirement do was fake somehow. Man in a rubber
costume, according to one lot. Old news already."
Meade: "I'm probably responsible for hundreds of deaths, indirectly.
I didn't plan that."
Colonel Emily Chaudhry: "They smell the blood. There's enough of
it here for them."
Meade: "We are about to do something extraordinary. Something that
will define our times. It's natural to have some doubts, but don't let
them get in the way!"
Colonel Robert Dalton: "I was told the sum total of sod all."
Colonel Emily Chaudhry: "You might find that you have to accept a
lot of things you wouldn't normally believe."
Colonel Robert Dalton: "I could have you shot. Or buy you a point.
Your choice."
Colonel Robert Dalton: "What the hell have I got into this time?"
