The placing of the stories, for the most part is obvious from the
combination of the Doctor and companion that each audio uses. The
official setting given by Big Finish is used where possible. It is
presumed that the stories are released in a sequential order for each
Doctor, and the following explanations are personal opinions only.
The Fifth Doctor settings are all fairly obvious given that Big Finish
only use the three television companions (Nyssa, Turlough and Peri) and
the places where it was just them and the Fifth Doctor are all
immediately apparent. It is noticeable though that Big Finish have
created a gap between The Five Doctors and Warriors Of The
Deep for the Fifth Doctor segments of The Sirens
Of Time, but chose not to use this for the Fifth Doctor part of
the Excelis trilogy, which takes place during the fourth episode of
Frontios. The Eye Of The Scorpion
introduces the Fifth Doctor's new companion, Erimem, and the stories
featuring her and Peri take place inbetween Planet Of Fire and
The Caves Of Androzani.
The stories with the Sixth Doctor and Peri are presumed to take place
between Revelation Of The Daleks and The Trial Of A Time
Lord, and this is certainly the case for Whispers
Of Terror, and also for ...ish.
Following The Trial Of A Time Lord, are the Frobisher and
Evelyn Smythe stories. The official placing for The Holy Terror is
between the DWM comic strips The World Shapers and The Age
Of Chaos, but certain events within these stories tend to make
that seem unlikely, unless 'taking place between' is interpreted
very broadly to encompass the events between Revelation Of The
Daleks and the events of The Trial Of A Time Lord which if
that was the case it can be inferred that the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher
travel some time together after The Trial Of A Time Lord which
could also fit in with the BBC Past Doctor Adventure Mission:
Impractical by David A. McIntee. The stories featuring Evelyn
Smythe would then follow the Frobisher stories. There is no real reason
for this apart from the fact that Frobisher was created first.
Project: Lazarus is presumed to take place
after Real Time due to the fact that the
Doctor's blue coat is referenced again which was introduced in the online
story.
Then after travelling
alone again after Evelyn leaves the Doctor, he meets up with Mel prior
to The One Doctor (in the PDA Business
Unusual by Gary Russell) which will eventually lead into the
events of Time And The Rani.
While Zagreus offers a reason for separating
audio continuity from book continuity, it is still presumed that
the majority of the Seventh Doctor Big Finish audios take place
immediately after Survival, before the
New Adventures began with Timewyrm: Genesys.
Dust Breeding has links to one of author Mike
Tucker's BBC novels, Storm Harvest, and from that it can
be inferred that Dust Breeding takes place
after this book. The Fearmonger's
tone and characterisation is markedly different from the other Seventh
Doctor and Ace stories and this tends to
indicate that this story takes place amongst the New Adventures, and
probably between Nightshade and
Love And War.
2004 will see a new companion, Hex, joining the Seventh Doctor and Ace in
The Harvest.
The official placing for The
Shadow Of The Scourge, featuring the Seventh Doctor, Ace and New
Adventures companion Bernice Summerfield, is between All Consuming
Fire and Blood Harvest.
There are several Seventh Doctor stories which take place prior to the
TV Movie, and while the Seventh Doctor section of
The Sirens Of Time is said to take place
immediately before this, the use of the original sound effects for the
TARDIS, as opposed to TVM style ones introduced in
Excelis Decays, suggest primacy lies
with the Excelis story, with Project: Lazarus
and Master following on.
The Eighth Doctor stories take place after the 1996 TV Movie
'Doctor Who' starring Paul McGann.
While there are references made in
Minuet In Hell to the BBC novel's first
companion Sam, which seem to indicate that these
stories take place after the first BBC Eighth Doctor Adventure
The Eight Doctors by Terrance Dicks, perhaps within
the three year gap that is mentioned in
Jonathan Blum and Kate Orman's Vampire Science,
Zagreus specifically attempts to separate
the book and audio continuity by alluding to subsequent events in the
novel line and showing that there are an infinite number of possible events.
All stories are released in sequential order, but the DWM special
Living Legend could conceivably be placed anywhere
before The Time Of The Daleks and the introduction
to Shada indicates it must take place before
Storm Warning as the Doctor is travelling alone
and it is the first time Romana has encountered the Eighth Doctor.
