A nation divided
A Queen's life at risk
A net of conspiracy closing in...
Sometimes being a time travelling adventurer just isn't easy...
For a start there's a temperamental TARDIS that lands a few thousand
years off course in 17th Century Paris. But why shouldn't the Doctor,
Peri and their travelling guest Erimem take a look around the city on
the morning of King Louis' annual State Ball?
As Peri becomes embroiled in a plot to kill Queen Anne and smash the
unity of the Church and the Crown, the Doctor finds himself duelling
Musketeers on the streets.
With Peri missing, Erimem catching King Louis' eye and a Musketeer's
sword at your throat, could things get any worse?
Probably...

Episode One:
The Doctor tells Erimem that the person in the carriage is not who she
thinks it is. It can only be Queen Anne herself...
Episode Two:
Richelieu orders Morand to open the door to the Palace so he can
interrogate Erimem, but Morand finds it blocked. As he eventually prises
it open, there is a massive explosion...
Episode Three:
Delmarre can't believe how many men they have. The Doctor admits he
doesn't know, but it's just as he feared. Peri questions him as to what he
means, and the Doctor declares that Buckingham is invading France...
Episode Four:
The Doctor offers his young companions a trip to Barastabon to pick up a
chocolate gateau, although Erimem's cat seems to have other ideas as he
goes to set the controls...
Rouffet: "It's never wise to creep up on a Musketeer, especially one with the wit, guile, sartorial elegance and charming good looks of Francois Rouffet!"
Richelieu: "Strike now or I shall perish from boredom, and I'm sure we both agree that is no way for a warrior to meet his maker."
The Doctor: "I sometimes think at my age that there's nothing left to discover, but something usually turns up."
Rouffet: "What a way to work up an appetite, kill a Cardinal's guard and insult a religious leader!"
The Doctor: "The universe is full of coincidence. Keeps everything ticking along nicely. Shakespeare made a career out of it, although I'm not sure how that helps us now."
Richelieu: "If you give me six lines written by the most honest man, I can still find something in them to hang him."
Previously entitled The Swashbucklers, The Church And The
Crown is the second Doctor Who script from
Cavan Scott and Mark
Wright, after their successful debut Project:
Twilight.
