Doctor Who: The Marian Conspiracy (#06)
|
|
|
Tracking a nexus point in time, the Doctor meets Dr Evelyn Smythe, a
history lecturer whose own history seems to be rapidly vanishing.
The Doctor must travel back to Tudor times to stabilise the nexus and
save Evelyn's life. But there he meets the Queen of England - and must
use all of his skills of diplomacy to avoid ending up on the
headman's block....
|
|
Episode One:
When Evelyn mistakes the toast as being for Queen
Elizabeth, she soon finds out that Mary is Queen and Elizabeth is
considered a usurper. Her supporters are traitors and death is
their reward!
Episode Two:
Evelyn realises that in her haste she has
forgotten her bag containing the Doctor's device. The nexus point is
catching up to her and as Leaf watches on, Evelyn begins to fade from
existence...
Episode Three:
When Evelyn surmises that the Doctor is the father
of her ancestor, the Doctor reminds her that if she is correct, she
won't be going anywhere herself as her ancestor's father was executed
by Queen Mary...
Episode Four:
After Evelyn persuades the Doctor that she will
make an excellent travelling companion, she suggests that a slice of
chocolate cake might be in order. As the Doctor agrees, he wonders
whether he'll regret this...
Evelyn: 'I can assure you my only connection to History is in the
field of Tudor scholarship.'
The Doctor: 'Really? I could have sworn it was Tudor fiction.'
The Doctor: 'I have a great respect for those who dare to go
against the established beliefs of their day.'
Evelyn: 'If you think I'm going to sit around here waiting to fade
away, you're very much mistaken.'
William Leaf: 'If they're heretics, burnings too good for them
really.'
Reverend Thomas: 'Enough of this! If I wish to hear female
babbling I can visit my wife!'
The Doctor: 'What would you say if I were to tell you that I once
destroyed an entire race? That I have led friends to their deaths and
caused numerous wars. That my intervention has led to peaceful races
taking up arms and good people having their faith or reason destroyed.
Because I failed to act, millions upon millions of people have been
enslaved or killed. What if I had done all those things, but had always,
always, believed I was doing the right thing?'
This story is the first to be set in the gap between The Trial Of A
Time Lord and Time And The Rani and introduces the Doctor's
newest companion - 55 year old Doctor Evelyn Smythe - played by
Maggie Stables. This was
Stephen Cole's last story as an Executive
Producer.
